The Forward Defensive - best shot in the game!
Unfortunately, another defeat for Conwy, but lots to cheer about, here.
Llandudno batted first and scored 234 (or 54 for 4 wickets). Everyone bowled well, and pleasingly, there were very few wides in the innings. Aaron was the pick of the Conwy bowlers and was well supported by a tight field. Dave Wilkinson, Cricket Development Officer, reported that he could not recall one error in the field - this must be highly commended.
Once again, it was our inability to protect our stumps that let us down when we batted. We scored 215 (or 50 for 7), playing some good cricket shots, but losing regular wickets (mainly bowled).
Rory captained the side really well, and has shown he is certainly capable of organising his team, both on and off the field.
Well played everybody and see you all at coaching this week - I think it may be further work on the forward defensive - most important shot in the game!
The U11s played their first game of the season at an extremely cold Bangor ground. Bowling first, they all bowled tight overs and restricted a young Bangor team to 230 (or 60 for 6 in old money). The highlight of the fielding display was a superb, direct hit, run out by skipper Rory.
Conwy were confident that they could chase 230, if they avoided losing wickets. Bangor's side included an Eryri bowler who made the task much more difficult by bowling two wicket maidens. Some good hitting in the middle overs from John and later Eban, saw Conwy inching closer to their target. Unfortunately, wickets in the final overs saw them fall just seven runs short of the total.
So, in conclusion: a great (if a touch cold) game, good bowling and tight fielding, but more hard work needed at training on our batting.
Well played everybody.
The time had arrived for our under 13's to take centre stage; the long wait was over.
Losing the toss, and being put into bat against a strong looking Mochdre side, Conwy started steadily with openers Llew and Ben. We were 25 for 1 when we lost Ben in the 8th over. Aidan came in next and Llew fell soon after leaving us 26 for 2 after some good bowling. Next in was newcomer Sam Hughes, and he and Aidan started to build a steady partnership. Sam started to take on the bowling with Aidan supporting and scoring 23, before being run out on the penultimate ball of the innings. Their partnership was worth 49, and the wicket meant that in came Captain George to face the last ball - which he happily dispatched to the boundary for 4. So, 79 for 3 was our innings score.
We set out to defend this reasonable total, with openers Callum and Adam. Conwy were celebrating their first wicket in the 3rd over, when Callum uprooted the opener's off stump, leaving them 23 for 1. After a good knock with the bat, Sam Hughes took the 2nd wicket thanks to a stunning catch by Charlie Nelson, and at 39 for 2 we pegged them back a bit, but we could not get the other opener out. He had his eye in and started to hit hard. Sam got another wicket and we had 2 good run outs by George and Llew, but it wasn't enough and we lost by 5 wickets in the 16th over.
All in all, we played fantastic, and every one of those boys did Conwy proud.
Come On Conwy!!!!!
So, the 2012 cricket season begins and, for most of our young side, this was not just the start of a new season, but of their cricket careers. We did not expect to be able to match the experienced Colwyn Bay team, but simply hoped to take part and enjoy the experience.
We batted first and scored 230 for 4. Everybody scored some runs and we defended our stumps well - to lose just four wickets in 12 overs against good bowling, was probably the highlight of our night's performance.
They scored 309 without losing any wickets. Everyone bowled at least an over, and how we failed to take any wickets is a mystery! We had several very good chances, but dropped catches and missed run outs meant that the margin of victory for the Bay team was larger than it perhaps should have been.
So, a great start from our youngest members, who can all look forward to their next match knowing that they can compete and that they are now officially 'Conwy Cricketers'.
